OUTLoud’s Story

OUTLOUD North Bay emerged from a deeply personal journey. Founder Seth Compton grew up without the safety, visibility, or affirmation he needed while navigating his identity. The supportive spaces he longed for places where he could be seen, heard, and protected simply weren’t there. As an adult, parent, and advocate, Seth made a transformative choice: if those spaces didn’t exist for him, he would create them for the young people coming after him.

In November 2019, Seth and his family launched what began as a small grassroots passion project. Through their dedication, OUTLOUD has grown into a vital support network for 2SLGBTQ+ youth across both Northern and Southern Ontario. Their family has invested their time, resources, and lived experience into building a community hub where young people can show up authentically and know they matter.

Seth’s evolution from surviving in silence to leading with purpose has shaped OUTLOUD’s mission in powerful ways. His story has helped families across Ontario better understand gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation as essential parts of human dignity. Through education, storytelling, and community engagement, OUTLOUD has guided parents, caregivers, and allies toward supporting their youth with compassion, clarity, and confidence.

Many 2SLGBTQ+ young people continue to face significant barriers, including:

  • Discrimination or rejection tied to sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression
  • A lack of safe, affirming spaces in schools, homes, and communities
  • Limited access to supportive healthcare and mental health services
  • Social isolation and fear of being misunderstood

When these needs go unmet, the impact on mental health can be profound. Feelings of anxiety, depression, and low self‑worth often intensify when youth feel unsafe or unseen. OUTLOUD exists to break that cycle by offering connection, validation, and a sense of belonging.

Gender‑affirming care whether social, emotional, or medical comes with important considerations, and every family’s path is unique. Research shows that when young people are supported in exploring and expressing their identity, their mental health improves, their sense of belonging grows, their risk of self‑harm decreases, and their overall well‑being strengthens. Challenges often arise not from the care itself, but from misinformation, lack of access, or environments where youth feel judged or dismissed. OUTLOUD advocates for informed, compassionate support so families can navigate these decisions with understanding and care.

At its core, OUTLOUD North Bay is more than a program, it’s a commitment. A commitment to ensuring every young person is celebrated rather than questioned. A commitment to equipping families with the tools they need to support their children. And a commitment to building spaces rooted in love, acceptance, and respect.

Seth and his family turned the support he once needed into a lifeline for countless youth. OUTLOUD continues to grow because the community believes in that vision and because every young person deserves the chance to live out loud.
